Valley Farm

Carriage Driving

Valley Farm has held approved B.D.S. Tests for drivers.
Sarah Ling has been driving horses since the age of twelve and was formerly a member of the British Driving Society, for a great number of years. Her instruction is along these lines to prepare clients for B.D.S Tests if they wish. She has experience with a number of different driving styles having studied for two years in a very successful competitive driving yard in South Africa.

Beginners Lessons
Private lessons can be arranged at any time when horses and staff are available
Instruction can take place in our floodlit Indoor school or outside, so the weather need never be a problem.

We have a large number of horses suitable for driving in single harness. Suitable for all levels of experience.

More Experienced Drivers
For people with some experience we also have a number of horses, which work in pairs. Some of which are used for the Wedding Carriage. Tuition is available using these horses. Those who want to increase their skills further might like to have lessons in driving tandem, unicorns, or teams.

Breaking a Pony to Drive
If you are thinking of breaking your own horse or pony to drive, we can teach you all the essentials that you will need to know, and give you guidance along the way.

Pub Drives
Arranged during the summer months. Clients harness up put to and drive in convoy to the locals for a drink or a meal before returning home.
(Dog Cart)

Pleasure Drives
By arrangement for couples to be driven by a friendly member of our staff in style around the lanes of Wickham Market in a landau (Similar to the carriage the Queen rides round Ascot in). An ideal gift for anniversaries, birthday presents and other special occasions. See the wedding page for pictures of the landau carriage.
We can even arrange to collect you from one of the local pubs, then drive you in style round the local country lanes, before returning you to the pub for a hearty Suffolk pub lunch.

Heavy Horse Lessons
(heavy horse)
Step back in time. Come and enjoy learning how to harness up a plough horse, the way it used to be done on our farm and many others. Learn how to long rein and hitch the horse onto one of the farm implements. Our patient Suffolk Punches and experienced horsemen make it a really enjoyable history lesson! See our Heavy Horses page for more details.

Horses
Numbering twenty, these range in height from 32 inches to 17.0 hh and have been picked for their skills in teaching driving to the novice. They will happily allow you to deck them in private, trade or heavy horse harness and teach you all the skills you require to make you confident.
