Here at Valley Farm, we have several pure bred and part bred heavy horses. Also known as cart horses, agricultural horses, or farm horses. Breeds include Suffolk Punch, Percheron, Clydesdale X, and Irish Draught X Vanners.
We are also on the look out for a small grey percheron mare, going in all gears. Please call us if you have one for sale - must be suitable for children to handle.
For those of you wishing to try your hand at walking behind a powerful Heavy Horse, while he pulls various farm implements, you have come to the right place.
We offer one hour lessons, with our experienced Suffolk Horsemen, for adults or children to learn all about agricultural horses. Our patient horses will help you all the way, however inexperienced you are. It doesn't matter if you've never driven a horse - We can give you the opportunity to experience a little piece of history, and a taster of what life used to be like, when horse power thrived.
You can buy gift vouchers from us, for a one hour heavy horse lesson.
The first lesson will usually include, how to harness up and the purpose of the different types of harness, handling of the reins, long reining and how to turn, how to attach an implement, and finally if all goes well, a chance for you to play the farmer all by yourself, under the watchful eye of one of our experienced horsemen.
Weekday or evening lessons can take place in our floodlit indoor arena, so you need not worry about the weather.
Please call to check availability for lessons, as some of the heavy horses spend the winter months elsewhere.
Most of our heavy horses can also be ridden. There are not many places you can go for a riding lesson or hack round the countryside on a rare Suffolk Punch or a huge Percheron, so if it's something you want to try, just give us a call. Lessons are available astride, side saddle or western.
If you are feeling adventurous you could also try Vaulting with one of the heavy horses. They are very patient, and will stand or walk patiently while you learn to climb on and off, and to perform all the basic moves, including standing on their backs. See our vaulting page for more details.
