Valley Farm Equestrian and Training Centre has limited placements available for school leavers, or those of any age wishing to gain equestrian qualifications.

In addition to being a BHS registered 'where to train' centre, Valley Farm is also a registered Pony Club centre. This means that if you are under 21 we can help you to pass your pony club tests as well as your BHS exams.

This is a great career opportunity to further your education by working towards NVQs and BHS qualifications.

Requirements: No experience necessary, as all training is given. Must be friendly, outgoing and enthusiastic. Must enjoy working with people and animals. Previous experience with horses is an advantage. Must be available at weekends. Students must be between 16 - 19 years of age. 16 - 65? See Further Education Satellite Courses

Remuneration: Students receive approx. ten hours formal tuition per week during term times. In addition to this they receive three days supervised guided instruction and free riding also during term times. An allowance of £40.00 a week allows students pocket money. In special circumstances some grants are available for safety clothing.

Students also have the opportunity to train in additional modules such as side saddle riding, western riding, carriage driving, stud management and foal handling.

FOR STUDENTS AGED 16 - 65

Valley Farm is a Satellite Centre for Otley College Equine students. Valley Farm provides high quality training in a range of equestrian disciplines. A great chance to obtain NVQ and BHS qualifications.

Why do so many students chose to train at Valley Farm?

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF COURSES AVAILABLE

BHS Stage I This is an excellent foundation course for anybody wanting to own their own horse. It covers the basics of Stable Management, Horse Care and Equitation.

BHS Stage II An intermediate course for those wishing to further their knowledge of horse care and equitation.

BHS Stage III A more advanced course, suitable for those wanting to go into a management position or further their qualifications.

NB: For all the BHS courses it is possible to train for the horse care and knowledge and / or Equitation. It is sometimes also possible to train for NVQ levels at the same time.

The courses are held throughout the academic year and enrolment takes place each September. (Students must be between 16 and 65 years of age)
All BHS courses are available either full time or part time. Hours are flexible to suit the individual. Part Time Courses require students to attend 210 hours per year. Full time courses require students to attend 420 hours per year.
The Satellite training agreement with Otley College means that the BHS Exams are funded by the College. Courses are charged at the usual class rates. Top up courses can be arranged, but will be charged at the usual rates.

ABRS We provide training for ABRS levels 1 to 10 and we are an examination centre for levels 1 to 4. (Any age)

Riding and Road Safety This is a 10 week course followed by the exam held at Valley farm. It is essential for all students wishing to take their BHS stage II, and also a good idea for any persons who ride on the roads. The course is offered at various times throughout the year. (Age 13 and over)

National Traineeships NVQ levels 1 & 2 and/or BHS Stages I & II. Earn as you learn. (Age 16-19)

Modern Apprenticeships NVQ level 3 and/or BHS Stage III and PTT. Earn as you learn. (Age 16-19)

Other Qualifications Training is available for those wishing to take Western Riding, Side saddle and Carriage Driving exams.

Pony Club Tests Valley Farm is a registered Pony Club Centre and offers candidates under 21 years of age the opportunity to take Pony Club Tests. These are progressive tests, similar the British Horse Society Exams.

Alternative Equestrian Disciplines Valley Farm also offers the opportunity for students to learn about Polocrosse, Side saddle, Horseball, Vaulting, Circus and High School work, Stud Work, Training and handling of young horses, which maybe useful for a future career.
There are a range of other pet animals on the farm, including goats, camel, a mule and donkey, cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, aviary birds and the miniature pony, which combine to make Valley Farm a fun and interesting place to learn.

Altogether the equine industry employs about 150,000 people, working hands-on with horses and in the ancillary industries which serve it. The range of jobs available to students completing equestrian courses is both varied and challenging. Valley Farm provides students with useful practical experience which is highly valued by most employers nowadays, in a world of increasing competition for employment.
